The Book I'm Excited to Read
Brain Defenders: Harness the Power of Your Immune Cells to Protect Your Brain for Life by David Perlmutter

You all know I'm fascinated by the question, “How do we protect our brains long before something goes wrong?” That's why I've been waiting on Dr. David Perlmutter's newest book, Brain Defenders, which is out this month.
For years, we've thought about brain diseases by focusing on the neurons that die. Dr. Perlmutter asks us to look somewhere else entirely, at the brain's immune cells, called microglia. Think of them as your brain's first responders. When they're working well, they protect, repair, and clean up damage. When they're chronically activated by inflammation, poor metabolic health, environmental exposures, or other stressors, they can begin harming the very brain they're built to defend.
It's a real shift in thinking, and one that may reshape how we approach Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, depression, and healthy cognitive aging in the years ahead.
What I appreciate most about Dr. Perlmutter's work is that he doesn't simply describe science. He asks an empowering question. If lifestyle influences these remarkable cells, what can we do today to help them protect our brains tomorrow?
That's exactly the kind of question I want us to ask!
I'm including a sneak peek of Chapter One with this newsletter because I think you'll find it as interesting as I did.
And because I believe this conversation is so important, I'd love to send you a copy of the book! If you'd like one, text me (713) 899-1384.
Why it's on my desk: We've spent decades studying the cells that die. This asks about the ones that were supposed to keep them alive: the microglia.
